SHILLONG, May 8: The Office of the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner has issued an advisory with a slew of precautionary measures in view of expected heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning in the region.
As per the advisory, the public has been asked to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines to prevent accidents and ensure public safety.
Residents have been asked to secure loose objects such as tin sheets, lumber piles, bricks, garbage cans and signboards that may be blown away by strong winds. They have also been advised to switch off  all electrical appliances like mobile chargers, television sets and electric irons if lightning persists.
With a heightened risk of flash floods, particularly near rivers and streams, the public has been urged to exercise extra caution.
Meanwhile, people have been strongly advised not to walk through or go near moving water, streams, drains, culverts, or waterfalls, as strong currents, even in shallow waters, could pose life-threatening risks.
Further, motorists have been warned against driving through flooded areas and advised to stay away from electric poles or power lines to avoid electrocution.
