SHILLONG, May 12: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Meghalaya, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places across the state on Tuesday.
The alert comes amid a broader weather system affecting the Northeast, with widespread rain and thunderstorm activity expected over the next five days.
The IMD’s latest bulletin predicts widespread moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph and gusting up to 50 kmph. The intense weather is expected to impact Khasi-Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills.
The IMD urged residents, especially those in vulnerable areas, to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
Similar weather conditions are expected in other NE states, and over West Bengal and Sikkim.
