SHILLONG, May 18: With the structural work of the new Assembly building now completed, focus has shifted to the early completion of the interior and premises, with hopes of making it operational by the Autumn Session of the State Assembly.
“Approximately 85 to 87 per cent — almost 90 per cent — of the physical work has been completed. The interior finishing will take some time, but with the structure now in place, we can proceed safely as we’re no longer affected by the rain,” said Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma.
Sharing further details, he stated, “The interior work can now begin. The tendering process, issuance of work orders, and selection of implementing agencies are currently underway. Very soon, the interior construction will commence.”
He also informed that beautification of the premises will be initiated alongside the interior works.
When asked about cost escalation, Sangma clarified, “Whatever escalation had occurred earlier remains as is. There has been no further escalation, although there is a separate sanction for interior furnishings. As far as the structural component is concerned, there has been no additional cost beyond what was previously reported.”
On the expected completion timeline, he said, “Let’s hope and pray we complete it before the Autumn Session. However, it depends, as the interior work, along with furnishing, painting, and other finishing touches, will take time.”
