SHILLONG, May 21: With Shillong experiencing intense rain, navigating the stretch from Rilbong to Upper Shillong has become a major challenge as torrents of water flow across several parts of the road during downpours, creating hazardous conditions.
Adding to the danger, loose stones are frequently washed onto the roadway, making it especially difficult for two-wheelers to pass safely.
Sources from the agency implementing the road work on the said stretch said that some drains in the upper stretches have been de-choked to help alleviate the situation. However, they noted the challenges of working within a limited right of way, compounded by constant traffic and the lack of an alternative route or diversion. Despite these constraints, the agency assured that efforts are ongoing to make the road as safe as possible, even during the ongoing construction and adverse weather conditions.
The four-lane road is being developed as part of the Shillong-Dawki Road Project, which is expected to ease traffic congestion that has long troubled commuters along this busy route.
