JOWAI, May 22: Many individuals, including members of the general public and students, benefited from a free health check-up camp organised by the Link Workers Project of the Society for Urban and Rural Empowerment (SURE), with support from Project Regeneration Meghalaya.
The camp, held at Amlarem Secondary School, was also supported by the staff of Jarain PHC under the leadership of Dr. F. Lamin.
During the program, Dr. SN Goswami, Chief Operating Officer of Project Regeneration Meghalaya, provided a brief overview of the project, highlighting its objective, which is to regenerate the soil and natural environment of the state through large-scale tree plantation.
He also noted that several clans and communities across Meghalaya have partnered with the project by allowing tree plantation on their barren lands.
Dr. Goswami further stated that the project aims to reach out to local communities, and organising health camps is one such initiative to build engagement and trust.
On the other hand, Rev. F. Pohshngap, secretary of the Pohshngap clan—one of the major stakeholders in the Regeneration Meghalaya Project in the Amlarem area—heaped praises on the efforts of the project and expressed optimism about its success.
He said that the initiative stands out because landowners are directly involved in planning and implementation through their representation in the Multi-Stakeholders Platform.
Similarly, Medical Officer at Jarain PHC, Dr. F Lamin, addressed the gathering on pressing health issues in the region. He voiced serious concern over the increasing number of HIV cases in Amlarem and highlighted teenage pregnancy as another growing problem.
He then urged students to be wary of these challenges and make informed choices.
Meanwhile, Director of Corporate and State Affairs at AstraZeneca India, Dr. Ajay Sharma, said the company is pleased to support Project Regeneration Meghalaya and hopes that its contribution will assist in addressing climate change.
He shared that the project envisions the plantation of six crore trees across the state.
Dr. Sharma also visited a plantation site near Amlarem belonging to the Dhar Sohtken clan, where he met the clan’s custodian, Kong Duwan Dhar.
Others who spoke at the event included District Resource Person Coriniki Slong and Zonal Supervisor of the Link Workers Scheme under SURE, Banisha Lamar.
