Police arrest Bangladeshi man from Sohra after brief chase

SHILLONG, May 25: Continuing the crackdown on illegal immigration, police on Saturday arrested a Bangladeshi national and two local facilitators from Ichamati in East Khasi Hills District.
The operation was carried out by Sohra Police, following a renewed directive to identify and act against undocumented foreigners, particularly those from Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Police said a vehicle defied signals to stop for naka checking and was intercepted near the Seven Sisters Falls viewpoint after a brief chase.
Police apprehended Robiul Islam, an electrician working in Bangalore, who was later identified to be a Bangladeshi national.
Two Indian nationals—Sujit Hajong and Ravi Singh—who facilitated Islam’s illegal movement were also nabbed.
All three were brought to Sohra police station and are currently under interrogation.
Authorities have invoked provisions of the Foreigners Act against them, and further investigation is under way, police said.
