SHILLONG, May 27: Following reports of large amounts of trash accumulating at Ganol Dam, Power Minister AT Mondal visited the dam and powerhouse on Tuesday to take stock of the situation.
Mondal, accompanied by his team, inspected the Ganol Dam and Powerhouse to assess the extent of garbage buildup attributed to heavy rainfall in the Ganol basin.
He stated that the accumulation of waste is primarily due to garbage washed down from upstream markets, picnic spots, and commercial establishments, along with forest debris such as tree branches and bamboo. “Due to heavy rain, runoff water carried all of this to the dam site,” he said, adding that most of the debris at the intake point has already been cleared and workers are cleaning the remaining waste.
According to Mondal, the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills has taken action, and officials from line departments are coordinating with relevant stakeholders and local committees to monitor and prevent garbage dumping in upstream markets and nearby localities.
