Shillong, June 2: In a major push towards hosting a successful 39th National Games in 2027, Meghalaya’s sporting machinery is gathering pace. The High Powered Committee (HPC), led by Commissioner and Secretary in-charge of Sports, Vijay Kumar, held its third review meeting on Monday to assess the readiness of state teams across various disciplines.
The meeting featured one-on-one sessions with eight State Sports Associations, as part of a broader government-led initiative to craft a performance-centric blueprint ahead of the marquee event. Each association presented detailed plans that included training modules, athlete development strategies, equipment requirements, nutrition guidelines, and projected medal targets.
Officials stated that all inputs would be meticulously reviewed by relevant authorities to ensure seamless execution, with the aim of creating a robust, medal-ready contingent by 2027.
The sessions were not limited to basic logistics. Instead, they dived deep into key sporting components—selection trials, international-standard training, competition preparedness, and technical support. The idea, according to insiders, is to build not just participants but contenders capable of standing shoulder to shoulder with the best in the country. The current round of consultations follows two earlier meetings held on May 21 and May 29, bringing the total number of engaged associations to 26. These include disciplines like Football, Athletics, Boxing, Weightlifting, Taekwondo, Aquatics, Cycling, Shooting, Wrestling, Judo, and others. More such consultations with remaining associations are slated in the coming days.Adding teeth to the process, the government is also rolling out a structured benchmarking framework.
This will guide and monitor every stage of preparation—from athlete selection and performance tracking to training benchmarks and trial results—ensuring that each discipline adheres to high-performance standards.
