SHILLONG, June 4: The Assembly Committee on Government Assurances on Wednesday interacted with its sister committee from the Madhya Pradesh Assembly at the Annexe Hall, Rilbong, reinforcing the importance of these committees in maintaining accountability and transparency in governance.
The meeting was chaired by Chairman of the Committee on Government Assurances, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar. He was accompanied by Committee Members Olan Sing Suin (Mawsynram MLA) and Dr Celestine Lyngdoh (Umsning MLA) along with senior officers from the Assembly Secretariat.
The visiting delegation from the Madhya Pradesh was led by Chairman of the Sister Committee Harishankar Khatik, (Jatara MLA). The delegation comprised four committee members — Ramesh Prasad Khatik (Karera MLA), Manisha Singh (Jaisinghnagar MLA), Dinesh Gurjar (Morena MLA), and Gaurav Singh Pardhi (Katangi MLA), along with senior officers from the Madhya Pradesh Assembly Secretariat. The visit forms a part of their Study Tour to Assam and Meghalaya.
During the post-meeting interaction, Tongkhar, remarked, “We had a very fruitful meeting between the two committees. It was a productive exchange of ideas and experiences. Both committees share similar responsibilities — to monitor the assurances given by Ministers on the floor of the House and ensure that concerned departments follow through on their commitments.”
“By sharing procedures and insights, we aim to strengthen the role of Assurances Committees in ensuring that ministerial commitments translate into actionable outcomes for the people. Such inter-legislative interactions are beneficial not only for our respective Assemblies but also for the departments involved, as they reinforce the mechanisms of democratic oversight,” Tongkhar, who is also the MLA of Mawkyrwat, said.
