SHILLONG, June 4: The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) on Wednesday voiced concern over the transportation of pigs from other states, particularly Uttar Pradesh, into Meghalaya.
In a letter addressed to Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal, HITO Ri-Bhoi district general secretary Marius Mallai stated that the organisation believes the unchecked movement of pigs from disease-affected regions poses a serious health risk to the people of Meghalaya.
“Without proper veterinary inspection and documentation, there is no assurance that the pigs being transported are free from diseases such as swine flu, which could have dire consequences for both animal health and public safety,” Mallai said.
He urged the Deputy Commissioner to consider enforcing stricter regulations and oversight on pig transportation into the state.
Mallai suggested that such measures could include mandatory health certifications issued by qualified veterinary officials, thorough inspections at all entry points, and a complete ban on pig transportation unless these protocols are strictly adhered to.
He emphasized that the safety and well-being of the people of Meghalaya must take precedence and called for proactive steps to prevent a potential public health crisis.
