SHILLONG, June 4: In a significant step toward strengthening the fight against substance abuse, a new rehabilitation centre is likely to be established in Nongstoin. The initiative is being spearheaded by the Urban Mission of New Nongstoin Presbyterian Church, with government support.
On Wednesday, a joint inspection of a government building at Upper New Nongstoin was conducted by DREAM Mission Director John F Kharshiing, local MLA Gabriel Wahlang, and the Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills. The visit aimed to assess the suitability of the site for conversion into a rehabilitation centre.
The inspection focused on evaluating the structural integrity and logistical feasibility of the location, which is being considered for the region’s much-needed rehabilitation facility. The initiative received strong support from all stakeholders present, reflecting a shared commitment to tackling the growing challenges of substance abuse in the district.
Speaking on the occasion, Nongstoin MLA Gabriel Wahlang praised the proactive efforts of the Urban Mission and DREAM in conceptualising such a vital institution for the community. He stressed the importance of collaborative approaches in addressing drug dependency and expressed hope that the proposed centre would become a sanctuary for healing and transformation.
Wahlang also described the initiative as a step in the right direction toward building a healthier and more resilient society, reaffirming his support for similar community-driven interventions in the future.
The project aligns with DREAM’s long-term strategy to bring equitable access to rehabilitation services closer to communities, ensuring timely help at the district level.
Accompanying the Mission Director during the inspection were the District Social Welfare Officer, the District Agriculture Officer, members of the Urban Mission, the New Nongstoin Presbyterian Church, and local community leaders.
