SHILLONG, June 4: The core committee of the UDP is scheduled to meet on Thursday to deliberate on the recent resignation of former party leader Jemino Mawthoh.
Party sources indicated that many UDP leaders remain unclear about the reasons behind Mawthoh’s departure, as he met only with party president Metbah Lyngdoh to inform him of his decision.
Mawthoh, who formerly served as the party’s general secretary, had long been regarded as a loyal member of the UDP. His resignation has come as a surprise to many within the party. “No one anticipated his exit,” one source noted, pointing to Mawthoh’s strong commitment to regionalism and his consistent advocacy for the unification of regional political forces.
In his resignation letter addressed to Lyngdoh, Mawthoh cited “unavoidable circumstances” and described his decision as “purely personal.”
UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh has downplayed the impact of Mawthoh’s exit, asserting that the party’s strength lies in its collective unity rather than any single individual. “We will miss those who leave, but we have to move on,” Lyngdoh stated, adding that the matter will be formally discussed.
