SHILLONG, June 5: The Urban Affairs department has initiated efforts to identify suitable land for establishing a permanent campus of the Captain Williamson Sangma State University at the New Shillong Township.
Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma said that, while plans for a permanent campus are under way, the government is also looking for a temporary location. “The Urban department has taken up the matter of setting up a permanent Shillong campus at the New Shillong Township. However, for the time being, we are exploring options for a temporary site, and the Shillong campus will function from there once it is finalised,” he said. “We are exploring all possibilities to identify the right location at the earliest,” the minister added, without disclosing any likely sites.  Meanwhile, the Tura campus of the university is progressing smoothly with its recruitment process. However, progress in Shillong has been stalled due to legal complications concerning the Bijni Complex. The North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has approached the High Court, challenging the state university’s use of the complex.
The Captain Williamson Sangma State University was initially conceptualised in 2011 as a state-level technical institution with the mandate to affiliate technical colleges. In 2022, the state government expanded its scope and renamed it, enabling the university to affiliate both technical and non-technical colleges across Meghalaya.
