SHILLONG, June 9: The Meghalaya government has filed FIRs against some media outlets, some YouTubers and even the family members of the accused and the victim for running a smear campaign against the state soon after reports of disappearance of the honeymoon couple emerged.
No stone was left unturned to defame Meghalaya with many targetting the state as a hub of crime and referring to Sohra as “crime-prone hills”, and inciting people on social media to take revenge against residents of Meghalaya.
Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Monday said that the murder case is the fallout of a love triangle where Sonam Raghuvanshi and her lover hired contract killers to kill her husband, Raja.
“As far as the attack on the image of Meghalaya, the media trial and slugfest that was orchestrated by some news channel, the state government through police has registered FIRs and we will also move legally on the matter to ensure all perpetrators who attacked the image of Meghalaya are brought to book,” he said even as he added that all the tourist destinations in the state are safe with not even a single case of assault taking place anywhere.
Asserting that Meghalaya will continue to play host to tourists, he added that the government will also engage with the local tourist fraternity to upscale the capacity to prevent such incidents in future.
Lyngdoh praised the state police for cracking the high-profile case in under a week.
“The main accused hired contract killers to carry out this heinous act. We commend the Special Investigation Team for solving the case within seven days.”
Lyngdoh highlighted the investigation as a testament to the competence of the Meghalaya Police, while also addressing concerns about the state’s image.
“This case demonstrates the efficiency and professionalism of our police force,” he said.
