Williamnagar, June 11: Continuing their protest seeking the transfer of the District Transport Officer (DTO) of East Garo Hills, the Eastern Zone GSU organised a one-day office picketing at the DTO’s offices demanding the immediate transfer of the ‘erring’ DTO In-Charge. The picketing was supported by leaders from all regional units of the Union, marking the first phase of a broader agitation against the current leadership of the DTO.
Earlier, on June 2, the Union had launched a poster campaign as the initial phase of their protest, aiming for a peaceful resolution.
“However, instead of receiving a positive response or acknowledgment from the concerned authorities, the Union leaders were summoned for questioning. This response from the authorities has only strengthened the resolve of the Union and prompted the decision to escalate the protest, starting with today’s office picketing,” stated the CSO.
The GSU had accused the officer of operating from his quarter and misbehaviour even when approached by the members of the Union.
“We believe that the transfer of the officer is crucial for ensuring a more efficient and transparent functioning. We are concerned about several issues under his leadership, which have negatively impacted the public. Despite the peaceful nature of the previous phase of the agitation, the authorities’ response has been dismissive, leaving the Union with no choice but to continue with further actions if their demands are not met,” stated Goera Sangma, president of the Eastern Zone – Williamnagar.
They asserted that they would not back down until the officer was changed and would decide on the next course of action through another meeting.
“We urge the concerned authorities to take the necessary steps to resolve the matter and avoid further escalation” they added.
