JOWAI, June 16: Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Monday inaugurated a memorial bust of late Kambel Shullai, founder and designer of the Eco-Friendly Crematorium, at Dulong Pohhali, Jowai. The unveiling of the bust was held as part of the observance of Shullai’s 13th death anniversary.
President of Seiñ Raij Jowai, Hercules Toi, remarked that the eco-friendly crematorium has greatly benefited the state, particularly by upholding traditional beliefs while ensuring hygienic and environmentally sound methods for the disposal of the deceased.
He further noted that approximately 80 crematoriums based on the design pioneered by the late Kambel Shullai are currently operational across Meghalaya including in the Jaintia Hills, Khasi Hills, and even the Garo Hills. Additionally, around 40 more applications for No Objection Certificates (NOCs) are in progress for setting up similar crematoriums.
In his address, chief guest Sniawbhalang Dhar said the occasion was a fitting tribute to the memory of Kambel Shullai, whose contributions are still widely remembered. He stated that this achievement would help keep Shullai’s name and legacy alive. Dhar also thanked Seiñ Raij Jowai for commemorating the late leader with the installation of the bust.
He further highlighted the practical and environmental advantages of such crematoriums such as saving time, curbing indiscriminate deforestation, and contributing to a cleaner, more beautiful environment. He urged the people of Jaintia Hills to remain united, support each other, and work together for the community’s future.
Among the dignitaries present were guest of honour and Jowai MLA, Wailadmiki Shylla, who also serves as Chairman of MUDA; and Ranjit Singh Gill, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force, Meghalaya. Both acknowledged Kambel Shullai’s unique talent and contributions to the Hynniewtrep nation. They affirmed the government’s continued financial support for the construction of eco-friendly crematoriums across the state.
Also in attendance were local Dollois (traditional chiefs), leaders of Seiñ Raij, and other invited guests. The event was further enriched by cultural performances from the youth committee of Seiñ Raij Jowai.
