TURA, June 16: A combined of NGOs of South West Garo Hills called Civil Society Achik Welfare Organisation (CSAWO) has highlighted a pertinent issue of export of stones from Garo Hills to Bangladesh through South West Garo Hills district.
In a statement to the media, the CSAWO said the continuous transportation of stones over the years has caused several problems to the local community in particular and all commuters in the area in general. Regular transportation of stones to the neighbouring country has not only caused severe damages to the roads due to plying of overladen trucks but also poses potential danger to the lives of students, patients, and other commuters. It highlighted the increasing traffic congestion and road accidents along the highway running through the district and disturbance caused to Ampati Civil Hospital located on the highway due to constant movement of overladen trucks. The organisation, in its statement, has called for government intervention to halt export of stones to Bangladesh until a sustainable solution is found, to ensure that the roads are repaired and maintained to prevent further damage and regulate transportation of stones to prevent overloading and ensure public safety.
