SHILLONG, June 30: In a significant step towards promoting inclusivity and unity, the Meghalaya government has asked government colleges in the state to introduce uniforms for students, fulfilling requests from several colleges and their students’ unions.
The Education Department announced the decision on June 24, stating that all colleges will institutionalise a student uniform, with each college having the freedom to design its own.
The government clarified that the introduction of uniforms aims to cultivate a spirit of unity and camaraderie among students. More importantly, it seeks to reduce the visibility of socioeconomic differences, thereby fostering a more inclusive learning environment.
The initiative is not entirely new to Meghalaya, as St. Anthony’s College in Shillong has already implemented uniforms for its degree students.
The directive grants government colleges autonomy in determining the design of the uniform, allowing for institutional identity while adhering to the broader goal of reducing disparity and building a shared sense of purpose among the students.
