SHILLONG, July 6: Amid heartfelt prayers and vibrant cultural displays, the Tibetan community in Shillong came together at the Upper Lumparing Tibetan Monastery on Sunday to mark the 90th birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.
The celebration was both joyous and symbolic, carrying deeper meaning against the backdrop of the ongoing global discourse surrounding the spiritual leader’s succession and China’s continued resistance to the Free Tibet movement.
The monastery premises reverberated with chants and prayers as monks and devotees gathered for the ceremonial butter lamp lighting a ritual of light and peace.
The occasion also featured cake-cutting, traditional Tibetan dances, and the presentation of certificates to senior citizens and meritorious students, celebrating not just the Dalai Lama’s life but also the strength of the Tibetan identity.
Member of Parliament in the Tibetan government-in-exile, Tsering Dolma, said the occasion served as a reminder of the collective spirit of Tibetans across the world to keep the flame of freedom alive
Speaking on the significance of the day, Tibetan Settlement Officer in Shillong, Tenzin Samten, described the celebration as a reflection of the community’s unwavering reverence for the Dalai Lama.
The birthday celebration comes at a time when questions surrounding his future successor remain unresolved. Yet, the celebration in Shillong echoed the sentiments shared by Tibetan communities worldwide a deep-rooted loyalty to their leader, a yearning for freedom, and an unbroken cultural bond that continues to thrive in exile.
