TURA, July 7: An awareness programme and animal health camp held on Sunday marked the observance of World Zoonosis Day at Warima village under the Chokpot C&RD Block.
Organised by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), South Garo Hills, in collaboration with CAU (I), the event aimed to raise awareness about zoonotic diseases, which can be transmitted between animals and humans, and promote preventive animal healthcare in the rural community.
The programme, led by Dr Athokpam Haribhushan, Principal’s Scientist and Head, included engaging and informative sessions conducted by Dr Rupam Bhattacharjya (Subject Matter Specialist (SMS), Livestock Production) and Dr Tanya R Marak (SMS, Plant Protection). The discussions centered on the causes, symptoms, prevention, and control of prevalent zoonotic diseases, emphasising community-level awareness and action. To support outreach efforts, a locally translated leaflet titled ‘Rabies: Symptoms, Prevention & Control’ was distributed among participants, communicating vital information in an accessible and culturally relevant manner.
A highlight of the event was the vaccination of over 30 dogs against rabies. Additionally, deworming tablets were provided to livestock and pet owners to help control internal parasites and improve overall animal health.
The rabies vaccines for the camp were provided by the Clinical Laboratory, Tura, under the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary department.
The initiative was warmly received by the villagers, who appreciated the timely intervention and practical knowledge shared. Through such proactive observances of World Zoonosis Day, KVK South Garo Hills, continues to strengthen public health awareness, promote animal welfare, and bridge the gap between veterinary science and rural livelihoods.
