BAGHMARA, July 10: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Siju regional unit, has issued a clarification on its stance regarding the NH-217 project to address concerns surrounding the proposed use of community land for compensatory forest purposes.
The GSU reiterated that it fully supports the NH-217 project. “We recognise the significance of this project for the growth, connectivity and long-term development of South Garo Hills. We strongly urge the concerned authorities and contractors to commence the project work at the earliest without further delay, in the larger interest of the people,” stated the GSU.
However, the GSU expressed deep concern over credible reports indicating that the Nokma is planning to hand over Aking land at Aratika Datra (Mozua No-V, Aking Nos. 1, 3, & 5) to the PWD (NH), which is intended to be transferred subsequently to the Forest department as compensatory forest land. “This decision appears to have been taken without consultation, discussion, or consent from the local community. Such unilateral action is unacceptable. Community land cannot and should not be used for compensatory purposes without proper public consultation and adherence to traditional and legal procedures,” stated GSU Siju president Ralseng Marak.
“Once transferred to the Forest department, the land will be designated as a restricted forest reserve, which will permanently cut off community access and hinder future development prospects of the area,” the GSU added.
It also urged the concerned authorities to identify alternative land for forest compensation outside the Siju area to safeguard community land for future generations.
