Tura, July 12: The iconic Durand Cup trophy arrived in Tura on Friday as part of the ongoing roadshow for the 134th edition of Asia’s oldest football tournament.
The event, organised by the Indian Armed Forces in collaboration with the Government of Meghalaya, aimed to celebrate the tournament’s rich legacy and boost excitement ahead of the matches.
The roadshow commenced from the P.A. Sangma Stadium in Dakopgre and passed through key areas of the town including Nazing Bazar, Araimile, Tetengkol, Hawakhana, the offices of the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, before culminating in a brief welcoming ceremony at the Tura Super Market.
Addressing the gathering, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal highlighted the historical significance of the Durand Cup, which dates back to the British era and holds a special place in Asian football. He commended Meghalaya’s growing role in Indian football, noting the state’s successful hosting of Durand Cup matches last year as a testament to its evolving sports infrastructure.“This event reflects Meghalaya’s readiness to host tournaments of national significance,” Aggarwal remarked. “It’s an important step as we gear up to host the National Games in 2027.”
As part of the event, dignitaries handed out tickets to select upcoming matches and launched a signature campaign to support the participating teams from the region—Rangdajied United FC, NorthEast United FC, and Shillong Lajong FC—who will compete in the 134th Durand Cup.
The roadshow not only celebrated the spirit of football but also reaffirmed the growing enthusiasm for the sport in Meghalaya, further strengthening the state’s identity as a budding sports hub in the Northeast.
