Tura, July 13: In a major boost to water sports in the Garo Hills, seven young kayakers from Tura have been selected for advanced training under world-class coaches as part of preparations for the National Games 2027.
The high-performance training camp is set to begin on July 18 at Whitewater Village in Umtham, Ri Bhoi district. The athletes were chosen following a rigorous three-day Kayaking Summer Camp organised by the Meghalaya Canoe Association (MCA) from July 10–12 at the same venue. The state-level camp was designed to scout and nurture talent in kayaking, canoeing, and rafting, with a focus on preparing athletes for national-level competitions. The standout participation came from Tura, thanks to the efforts of the Tura Adventure Club (TAC), which had conducted a local camp earlier to shortlist and prepare promising candidates for the state trials. All seven selected athletes from Tura impressed with their dedication, discipline, and adaptability despite limited prior exposure to professional kayaking. In a statement, TAC expressed pride in the selection, calling it a significant milestone for the sporting journey of Garo Hills.
The Club also thanked the Meghalaya Canoe Association, supportive parents, and local community members whose encouragement and belief have helped place Garo Hills firmly on the national map of water sports.
