SHILLONG, July 14: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) on Monday forced the closure of the General Post Office (GPO) and the Upper Shillong Sub Post Office at Hynniew Mer, Upper Shillong, after the offices remained open despite the observance of the Behdeinkhlam Festival, a major cultural event among the Pnar community.
Expressing strong resentment, FKJGP leaders criticised the postal authorities for failing to respect the cultural and religious significance of the festival, which is celebrated by the local indigenous community.
The FKJGP also urged both the Central and State governments to officially declare public holidays on important festivals and occasions observed by the indigenous tribes of the state.
The organisation further warned that it would take stern measures if government offices and private establishments do not declare a holiday on July 17, marking the 190th death anniversary of Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem.
