SHILLONG, July 15: With the BJP yet to make a significant electoral breakthrough in Meghalaya, Cabinet Minister and senior BJP leader AL Hek has urged party leaders and supporters to remain patient, reiterating the party’s long-standing claim that the state will witness a BJP-led government in 2028.
Despite ruling at the Centre for over 10 years, the BJP has struggled to establish a foothold in Meghalaya, apart from the victories in the constituencies of Hek and Sanbor Shullai. ) Speaking to reporters, Hek recalled that when the BJP was first formed, it had only two Members of Parliament, but today, it has over 240 MPs. He pointed out that nothing can be predicted in politics and asked supporters not to lose hope. “Don’t give up, as failure is the pillar of success,” Hek said, confidently asserting that Meghalaya will see a BJP-led government in 2028.
According to Hek, the party already has potential candidates and has begun preparations for the 2028 Assembly elections.
On the issue of cabinet berth sharing between him and Sanbor Shullai, Hek said the decision will be made by the party leadership.
When asked whether the Rajya Sabha seat should be given to the BJP, Hek responded that the matter depends on the NPP, as it is the largest partner in the coalition. He added that the BJP will have to abide by the consensus.
