SHILLONG, July 21: Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma is optimistic about Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma pursuing a proposal to extend the railways to Baghmara.
He believes railway connectivity will open up economic opportunities and address the rising demand for employment in the region.
“I have given a memorandum to the Chief Minister requesting him to extend the railway connection from Mendipathar to Baghmara via Nongalbibra or via Tura, Tikrikilla, Dalu, etc.,” Rakkam Sangma told media persons on Monday.
He said the Chief Minister would take up the proposal with the Centre, as he recognises the importance of this initiative for the state’s economic development.
The Education Minister also underscored the historical relevance of connectivity in the area, pointing out that trade with the erstwhile East Pakistan flourished before India’s independence. This momentum was lost after the partition of India, which disrupted trade and commerce in the region.
He stressed the potential advantages of a railway connection to Baghmara, stating that it would enhance access to markets in Bangladesh and beyond. This, he said, would help the state capitalise on its natural resources and cultural products.
According to the minister, the proposed railway link would generate employment and spur economic growth. He added that such connectivity could boost key industries like tourism, agriculture, and transport, ultimately reducing the state’s dependence on government jobs.
Railways in Meghalaya have been largely opposed owing to the perceived fears that it would bring a large-scale influx of outsiders into the state.
The pressure groups want mechanisms like the inner-line permit before giving their nod for the introduction of railways in the Khasi-Jaintia region of the state.
