Rape-murder accused held in Ri-Bhoi after 4 yrs of crime

MAWKYRWAT, July 22: After over four years of continuous hunting, South West Khasi Hills Police finally traced and arrested one person suspected of the rape-murder of a minor girl in the district.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, South West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Banraplang Jyrwa said that on March 6, 2021, one 12-year-old girl went missing from her home at Borsora village under Ranikor Civil Sub-Division in the district.
“Her body was found the next day and during post-mortem it was ascertained that she had been raped and murdered. One suspect identified as Modu Sangma had absconded and could not be traced since then,” Jyrwa informed.
The district police chief said that the investigating officer kept on pursuing the case and eventually she traced the absconder to Byrnihat, Ri-Bhoi.
With the help of police personnel from Byrnihat Outpost, the suspect was arrested on Sunday and brought back to Mawkyrwat police station.
The SP also informed that investigation into the case is on to ascertain whether another people were involved in the rape and murder case. He also informed that they will seek five days of police custody for the suspect.
