SHILLONG, July 23: In a bid to protect the environment, the various Dorbar Shnong of Mawlai area have taken the lead in initiating an awareness campaign to discourage the use of plastics among shops located in the area.
The Dorbar Shnongs, along with the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) and the enforcement wing of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), on Wednesday conducted an inspection covering shops along the stretch from Mawlai Stand Bus to Mawlai Mawroh to determine whether they were using plastics permitted by the FSSAI. The initiative aimed to educate shopkeepers and business owners about the importance of avoiding the use of plastics.
Speaking to reporters, Mawlai Phudmuri Rangbah Dong, Churchill Syiemlieh, urged residents of Mawlai to carry their own cloth bags when going to the market.
He also appealed to shopkeepers and business owners to stop using plastic and to comply with the guidelines issued by the MSPCB.
