SHILLONG, July 26: Brushing aside claims that it will be a “spent force” by the 2028 Assembly elections, the United Democratic Party (UDP) has hit back at the Voice of the People Party (VPP), saying that while forecasts about the future are easy to make, real political relevance is built in the present and the UDP is actively doing just that.
Leader of the Opposition in the KHADC, Titosstarwell Chyne, dismissed the VPP’s remark as speculative, asserting that what matters is the present momentum.
He maintained that the UDP is currently focused on strengthening its base and mobilising its organisation across constituencies. According to Chyne, the party has already begun identifying potential candidates and is actively preparing for the battles ahead, including the 2028 Assembly polls.
On whether the VPP considers the UDP a political threat, Chyne indicated that only the VPP could answer that question. However, his comments reflected a quiet confidence that the UDP’s groundwork would speak for itself in the days to come.
Regarding the upcoming elections to the GHADC, the UDP confirmed that it will be fielding candidates and that preliminary preparations have already commenced.
Party functionaries on the ground have reportedly begun assessing constituencies and laying the foundation for a full-fledged campaign.
While political rivals may be busy trading forecasts, the UDP appears focused on the present task of rebuilding, consolidating, and gearing up for the electoral battles that lie ahead.
