SHILLONG, July 26: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is preparing to nominate an acting general secretary during its forthcoming Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting, as internal consultations continue following the resignation of senior leader Jemino Mawthoh.
UDP working president Titosstarwell Chyne indicated that while the party’s constitution provides for the election of a general secretary during a General Council meeting, the current situation necessitates an interim decision by the CEC.
The date for the meeting is expected to be fixed soon, with party president Metbah Lyngdoh currently holding consultations with various senior leaders. On the scheduled day of the CEC, the name of the acting general secretary will be formally nominated.
As of now, no names are officially in contention for the post. Party leaders maintained that the UDP follows democratic processes and no direct appointments are made without discussion and a decision within the CEC.
This internal development follows the resignation of veteran political leader Mawthoh, who stepped down from the UDP as well as from his position as Honorary Adviser to the Meghalaya government. In his resignation letter addressed to UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh, Mawthoh cited unavoidable circumstances and stated that the resignation would take effect immediately.
Associated with the UDP since 2014, Mawthoh expressed appreciation for the trust and opportunities extended to him by the party leadership over the years.
His exit has left a key vacancy in the party’s organisational structure, prompting the upcoming move to fill the post of acting general secretary.
