SHILLONG, July 27: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has blamed past Executive Committees (ECs) for the nullification of the 2014 agreement between the KHADC and Hima Mylliem, which declared “Law Mawpat” as a “Law Adong” (protected forest).
Speaking at a public meeting organised by the party’s youth and women wings on Saturday, VPP vice president Kara H Chen expressed disappointment that certain forces had succeeded in nullifying the agreement, which was signed during the tenure of former KHADC CEM Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit a decade ago.
He blamed the successive ECs after Basaiawmoit’s leadership for failing to uphold the agreement, saying their actions showed a lack of commitment to causes that serve the broader interests of the people and the community.
Chen highlighted that the declaration of “Law Mawpat” as a protected forest was aimed at safeguarding the area from misuse or destruction—especially relevant at a time when environmental preservation has become a global priority.
Praising Basaiawmoit’s foresight, he said the move was intended to protect water sources and ensure residents have access to clean air.
VPP state youth wing president Marbud Dkhar, meanwhile, revealed that several boundary pillars have been erected inside the forest and that the party has received information about land allotments made to some lawmakers and private individuals.
He reiterated the party’s firm stand that Law Mawpat must continue to retain its status as a “Law Adong”.
“We strongly oppose any attempt to revoke the 2014 agreement between KHADC and Hima Mylliem,” he asserted.
Speakers at the meeting vowed to resist any move aimed at removing the protected status of Law Mawpat.
The event was attended by several party MDCs, supporters, and members of the public.
