SHILLONG, July 28: The Meghalaya government is planning to launch a QR code-based tracking system for every bottle of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) sold in the state before Independence Day.
Excise Minister Kyrmen Shylla revealed that the entire process of tracking IMFL—from the bottling plant to the retailer—will be rolled out within the month of August.
Admitting that illegal activities have continued even after the introduction of holograms on IMFL bottles, Shylla said some individuals had started operating illegal factories. However, with the introduction of QR codes, consumers will be able to scan the code and immediately verify the authenticity of the liquor.
“We want to ensure that all liquor sold in Meghalaya is approved by the authorities. If any illegal activities are found to be taking place in any factory, strong action will be taken,” the minister asserted.
He also noted that in some localities where liquor is completely prohibited, children have started abusing drugs. He clarified that the sale of liquor is being conducted in accordance with government policy.
When asked about the concentration of IMFL stores in certain areas, the minister said the government has temporarily halted the issuance of new licences for retail shops. A study will be conducted to assess the number and distribution of retail liquor outlets in localities.
Shylla expressed optimism that the state, which expects to earn around Rs 500 crore in revenue from IMFL sales this year, will see a significant increase in revenue once the QR code-based system is implemented.
A few months ago, the state Cabinet approved the Excise department’s proposal to introduce the QR code-based tracking system, with the goal of streamlining operations and enhancing accountability in liquor sales.
