SHILLONG, July 28: In a surprise inspection near a parking lot in Paltan Bazar, under the Cantonment area, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Monday detected around 50 illegal immigrants.
The KSU claimed to have seized large quantities of ganja, narcotic substances, and intoxicants during the operation.
According to KSU information and publicity secretary, Pynshai Rani, the individuals had no valid identification documents, such as EPIC cards, to prove their citizenship or legal status.
The area where the individuals were found was filthy, foul-smelling, and resembling a slum, with around 50 people living without basic sanitation, he said.
Pynshai also alleged that drug peddlers were among those staying in the area.
The KSU members evicted those staying illegally and raised concerns over the state government’s failure to control illegal immigration.
Pynshai questioned the government’s inability to implement effective mechanisms to monitor and restrict the influx of outsiders and urged the authorities to take responsibility for any law and order issues due to its negligence.
