NONGPOH, July 28: In a distressing incident that occurred on Sunday evening, a man from Umtasor Mawdkhar village reportedly fell into the Umran river while resting on a bridge at Iewsier, an area under the jurisdiction of Saiden village in Ri-Bhoi.
The individual has been identified as EB Nongshli (47). According to reports, he was sitting and resting on the bridge with his friends when he suddenly slipped and fell into the river.
Despite immediate rescue efforts by his companions and local residents, he was swept away by the strong currents and could not be found.
The Headman of Umtasor Mawdkhar, R Mukhim, said the incident took place at around 7 PM. Upon receiving the news, he promptly alerted the Nongpoh Police Station and rushed to the scene himself.
Mukhim added that several villagers even entered the river to search for the missing man throughout the night, but their efforts yielded no results. The search operation resumed again on Monday with the help of police and local volunteers.
Speaking to reporters, Phyrnai Nongshli, the cousin sister of the missing man, shared that he had left home earlier that morning intending to visit a nearby cultivation area. It wasn’t until late in the evening that the family received the heartbreaking news about his fall into the river.
She expressed her deep gratitude to the villagers who have tirelessly assisted in the search and continue to do so up till Monday.
