15 militants killed in KPK by Pak security forces
PESHAWAR, July 29: Pakistani security forces have killed at least 15 militants and destroyed their hideouts in a series of operations in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said on Tuesday. Over 200 personnel from the Pakistan Army and police are participating in the 10-day operation across Hangu, Karak, Orakzai, and Kurram in the province, bordering Afghanistan. “So far, 15 militants have been killed and several others injured,” Kohat Regional Police Officer Abbas Majeed Marwat said. The security forces have also destroyed several hideouts of militants in the region, he said. The operations are still ongoing in the hilly regions of Chappri, Kundao, Shanawari, Zargari, Naryab, and adjoining forest areas, Marwat added. Security forces used gunship helicopters to carry out aerial strikes on militants fleeing towards the mountainous forests, he added. A search operation is also underway in Koh-e-Maidan, a no-go area in the Karak district, which has now been cleared of militants, he said. (PTI)

LAHORE, July 29: Nine people have been arrested in eastern Pakistan in connection with the death of Sidra Bibi, an 18-year-old woman who was allegedly killed by a local council of elders after marrying a man of her choice. The case has drawn widespread condemnation in a country where honour killings are still common. The independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan reported that 405 women were killed in 2024 in such cases, compared to 226 in 2023. Honour killings, where family members kill women for actions perceived as bringing shame to the family, have increased in recent years. In January, police arrested a Pakistani man suspected of killing his US-born 15-year-old daughter for refusing to stop posting videos on TikTok. These “honour killings” reveal a deep-rooted mindset that views women as the property of men, with most women in Pakistan facing discrimination from childhood through adulthood. (AP)
Gunman opens fire in NYC office, kills four including police
NEW YORK, July 29: A man carrying a rifle killed four people at a New York City office tower, including an off-duty police officer, and wounded a fifth before taking his own life. The officer was Didarul Islam, 36, an immigrant from Bangladesh who had served as a police officer in New York City for 3 1/2 years. Police identified the gunman as Shane Tamura, of Las Vegas, and said he killed himself. The motive is still unknown, but officials are working to understand why he targeted the location. Another man was seriously injured and remains in critical condition. Surveillance video showed a man exiting a BMW and carrying an M4 rifle before he walks toward the building. He opened fire on the NYPD officer, shot a woman who tried to take cover, and began “spraying” the lobby with gunfire.
