TURA, July 30: One of the three sensational cases that rocked the entire Garo Hills region, the rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl from the district was finally cracked after South Garo Hills Police arrested a 17-year-old boy for the crime.
On July 12, a missing person case was filed by the parents of the victim after she went missing the previous day. Two days later, the body of the victim was found near a water body with signs of sexual assault. Forensic later confirmed the rape of the 14-year-old.
SGH Police frantically searched for clues into the case but turned up empty handed. In the meantime, police personnel continued to interrogate persons.
“We interrogated more than 100 persons from the same locality of the victim, were questioned, before we narrowed down to a few who apparently were close to where the incident took place. The suspect was the only one whose description of where he was did not match everyone else, who were nearby witnesses. He finally confessed to his crime after his parents spoke to him,” SGH Superintendent of Police, Shailendra Bamaniya, said.
The motive for the murder, as per sources, was to ensure the girl did not reveal the act of sexual assault he allegedly perpetrated as they were from the same village. He reportedly dumped the body after the murder.
The 17-year old has been sent to a welfare home with whether he will be tried as an adult for the heinous crime he perpetrated, to be decided soon by the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB).
A case of rape and murder have been lodged under the POCSO Act.
