GUWAHATI, July 31: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a former director of a private company, accused of financial fraud in Assam, on Wednesday.
The investigation agency informed in a statement on Thursday that the accused, Ajay Kumar alias Raju Gupta, former director of Idol India Group of Companies, who has been absconding and evading arrest for several years, was arrested from Kolkata.
The CBI had registered the case in pursuance of a notification, dated May 6, 2013, issued by the Assam government, and an order of Supreme Court, dated May 9,.2014, issued in writ petitions on the allegations that the directors of the company, by implementing different schemes under the names such as, “Idol India Infrastructure Ltd., Idol India Debenture Trust and Idol India Projects Ltd,” collected huge sums of money from people in Assam by promising to return the money with interest, and misappropriated the same.
After investigation, a charge-sheet was filed by CBI before the Court of Special Judge, CBI, Guwahati on December 22, 2022 against the accused Ajay Kumar alias Raju Gupta and others under Sections 120B, 406, 409, 420 of IPC and Section 4, 5, 6 of the Prize Chits and Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act, 1978.
Substantial efforts were made by the CBI team to trace the absconding director’s present whereabouts at Kolkata leading to his arrest.
The arrested accused has been produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, North 24 Parganas at Barasat, West Bengal, who granted his transit remand. The accused was also scheduled to be produced before the Special Judge, CBI Court, Guwahati on Thursday.
