SHILLONG, July 30: Amid lingering concerns over structural safety, the new Meghalaya Legislative Assembly building at New Shillong Township is undergoing regular safety audits, with the ceiling’s load-bearing capacity being vetted by IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee.
Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma said that top-level technical scrutiny is in place to ensure the safety of members and visitors, as the project enters its interior construction phase.
The Speaker emphasised that the concerns raised after the earlier dome collapse have not been taken lightly. A team of reputed consultants including those involved in the interiors of the Indian Parliament has been engaged to oversee this phase.
He noted that while structural works are complete, the interior stage brings its own set of challenges, particularly with the integration of acoustic systems, audiovisual setups, and advanced security features within the main Assembly hall.
He stressed that these elements cannot be rushed and must be executed with precision, keeping safety at the forefront. Every material used is being carefully selected to ensure long-term integrity and the protection of all individuals inside the building.
With administrative approvals and work orders cleared, interior construction is in progress.
However, the timeline for holding the upcoming autumn or winter session in the new complex remains uncertain, as completion will depend on the pace and complexity of the ongoing installations.
On the cost front, Sangma said the project remains within budget for now. While acknowledging the possibility of escalation due to time and material factors, he indicated that no significant overruns have occurred thus far.
The new Assembly building is being positioned as a secure and modern seat of governance, one that reflects a blend of caution, technological foresight, and renewed public confidence.
