KYIV, Aug 1: Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, observed an official day of mourning after a Russian drone and missile attack killed 31 people, including five children, and injured over 150.
The attack was the highest number of children killed and injured in a single attack on Kyiv since aerial attacks began in October 2022. Russian forces have escalated their attacks on Ukrainian cities, ignoring calls from Western leaders to stop striking civilian areas after over three years of war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for more sanctions on Russia, citing Russia’s recent launch of over 5,100 glide bombs, 3,800 Shahed drones, and nearly 260 missiles against Ukraine. Ukraine also called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting to push Putin into accepting a ceasefire. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces are under heavy pressure in the strategic hilltop city of Chasiv Yar, where Russia is making a concerted push to break through defenses after 18 months of fighting. (AP)
