TURA, Aug 3: A search and rescue operation has been launched to trace Teseng M Sangma, an agriculture officer from Ampati, South West Garo Hills, who was swept away by strong currents while attempting to cross the Ganol river at Sella Wari, near Tura, on Sunday afternoon.
Sangma, a resident of MBoSE near Dolampong under Araimile police station, was on a family outing at the Sella Wari picnic spot when the incident occurred. He was caught by the river’s powerful currents and disappeared despite immediate search efforts.
Teams from the Fire and Emergency Service, Tura Police, and local expert divers are involved in the rescue operation.
Due to darkness, the search was paused at 7:30 pm and will resume at dawn on Monday, according to West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Abraham T Sangma.
Heavy rainfall on Saturday night has caused rivers across Garo Hills, including the Ganol river at Sella Wari, to swell significantly.
