SHILLONG, Aug 5: Meghalaya is likely to witness heavy rainfall over the next five days, officials said on Tuesday.
South West Khasi Hills and East Khasi Hills districts are likely to witness intense spells of rain on August 7 and 8, they said.
In light of worsening monsoon conditions, the Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), East Khasi Hills, has urged residents to refrain from all non-essential travel to Pynursla and its adjoining areas.
The cautionary notice comes in the aftermath of a fatal road incident at Rngain, where five people from the same family lost their lives after their vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a deep gorge.
Officials have appealed to the public to avoid the affected routes unless absolutely necessary. In cases where travel cannot be avoided, commuters are advised to exercise extreme caution and stay informed about real-time weather conditions.
Authorities have also emphasised the importance of strictly following all travel advisories and warnings issued by the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Pynursla, and the DDMA, East Khasi Hills. In the event of any emergency, individuals are requested to contact the helpline number 112 for assistance.
