Militants launch drone strike on Pak police station
PESHAWAR, Aug 5: Militants carried out a drone attack on a police station in Bannu district in northwest Pakistan, police said on Tuesday. According to police, militants used the quadcopter to drop an improvised explosive device (IED) on Huwaid Police Station in Bannu district, which borders North Waziristan, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province The IED landed in the police station’s courtyard but failed to detonate, they said. A bomb disposal squad was swiftly deployed and safely defused the device, preventing any casualties or damage, police said. Following the incident, a search operation was launched in the area to trace the attackers. Also, security was tightened at nearby checkpoints and sensitive sites. Officials noted a rising trend in drone-assisted militant attacks in recent weeks, particularly against police and security installations. (PTI)
32 bodies found in hidden graves in central Mexico
MEXICO CITY, Aug 5: Mexican authorities have discovered 32 bodies on a property in Irapuato, with nearly half of them identified. The bodies were found in clandestine graves in the community of La Calera, about 320 kilometers northwest of Mexico City. The discovery follows a mass shooting in Irapuato two months ago, which left 12 people dead. Guanajuato has been experiencing persistent violence in recent years, with over 1,500 homicides recorded from January through July. Organized crime groups often bury their victims in clandestine graves, and the Mexican government’s current tally of disappeared individuals is nearly 132,000. (AP)
Police nab suspect in Tennessee family murders
JACKSON, Aug 5: Police in Tennessee said on Tuesday that the man wanted in the killings of the parents, grandmother and uncle of an infant found alone has been arrested. It came shortly after police warned residents to stay inside their homes, having received a report that the man was spotted in a neighborhood. Authorities said Austin Robert Drummond was in custody amid a search. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation already charged Tanaka Brown, 29, and Giovonte Thomas, 29, with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. Investigators allege both men “assisted” Drummond, 28, in the killings. (AP)
