Warjri dismisses suggestion of any major shortfall
SHILLONG, Aug 6: With Meghalaya preparing to host the 39th National Games in 2027, Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri on Wednesday said the groundwork has begun, with trials already underway across the State and sporting infrastructure largely in place.
“The past month we have already distributed monetary assistance to various associations. After that, they have taken the initiatives and started the trials where they are going to every district and holding trials. The process is on,” Warjri informed.
The minister noted a growing enthusiasm among young athletes from across the State.
“As far as I have seen and been informed we are getting a very good response. This is a process which will go on till National Games is held,” he said.
When asked whether infrastructure remained a concern ahead of the high-profile event, Warjri dismissed the suggestion of any major shortfall.
“In terms of infrastructure we have no problem. As of now we are fully equipped in terms of the centres that are needed. No doubt there are few that requires renovation, a bit of here and there is always there, but when we talk about the larger infrastructure I believe we are fully equipped,” he asserted.
He further underscored the significance of Meghalaya hosting the National Games, calling it a rare and valuable opportunity for local talent.
“This is a great opportunity for the athletes of the State — a very huge platform. National game is being held here and you never know when it is going to come again. So for all the sport loving athletes this is a great opportunity to grow and shine,” he said.
To aspiring athletes across the State, Warjri’s message was one of encouragement and dedication.
“My message to athletes work hard and make use the best of this opportunity and may be through these platform you can achieve the goals you have,” he concluded.
Meghalaya is slated to host the 39th National Games in 2027, and preparations on various fronts from trials to infrastructure checks are expected to continue steadily in the run-up to the event.
