SHILLONG, Aug 6: The Synjuk ki Khlieh Nongsynshar Shnong under the Mawsynram C&RD Block has urged Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to upgrade the block into a civil sub-division, citing a long-standing public demand and the urgent need for better governance and service delivery.
In a letter submitted to the Chief Minister on Wednesday, Synjuk Chairman Hiamdor Rapsang highlighted that the demand for civil sub-division status has been pending for over 20 years but remains unfulfilled. He expressed the Synjuk’s resolve to continue pursuing the matter until it is realised.
“The demand for a civil sub-division is not new. It has been raised for two decades, yet no concrete steps have been taken. We are committed to following up until it is implemented,” Rapsang stated.
He argued that the upgradation is essential to bring the administration closer to the people, especially in light of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA-2) government’s stated commitment to being a “people’s government.” “We believe your government will fulfill this long-standing demand without conditions, as the region already hosts multiple government offices and meets the necessary criteria for civil sub-division status,” he added.
Rapsang noted that the Mawsynram C&RD Block, established in 1962, currently serves over 144 villages with a population of around 65,000. However, poor road and communication infrastructure continue to hamper development, especially in remote and border areas.
“Residents struggle to access even basic administrative services due to poor infrastructure and long travel distances. Creating a civil sub-division would significantly alleviate these challenges,” the Synjuk stated.
The delegation reiterated that the proposed upgradation would improve governance, enhance service delivery, and empower local communities by making administrative services more accessible.
