4 paramilitary forces killed in Pakistan attack
PESHAWAR, Aug 6: At least four personnel of the paramilitary Frontier Constabulary were killed by unidentified gunmen in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Wednesday, police said. The assailants fired indiscriminately on a Frontier Constabulary (FC) vehicle in Amn Kot Toi area in Karak district, killing the four personnel. Security forces and police swiftly cordoned off the area and initiated a search operation to apprehend the attackers. A police official indicated that the attack was pre-planned, with the assailants lying in wait. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur strongly condemned the attack and directed relevant authorities to take immediate action to apprehend those responsible. (PTI)
Rajapaksa Kin held in first anti-graft arrest under NPP govt
COLOMBO, Aug 6: Shasheendra Rajapaksa, the son of Chamal Rajapaksa, has been arrested in an anti-corruption case, marking the first arrest from Sri Lanka’s powerful political dynasties under the current NPP government’s anti-graft crusade. He is accused of misappropriating state-owned land in the southeastern region and illegal construction. After an arson attack in May 2022, Rajapaksa used his political authority to pay compensation, despite officials showing reluctance to pay, citing the plot still belonged to the state. The ruling National People’s Power (NPP) has arrested several former ministers of the past government as part of its anti-graft crusade, with two receiving a 25-year sentence. Rajapaksa was a minister of state until September last year and previously served as the chief minister of the south eastern province. (PTI)
Nepal arrests three Indians with illegal firearms
Kathmandu, Aug 6: Three Indian nationals were arrested for possessing an illegal weapon in southern Nepal, police said on Wednesday. The arrests were made on Tuesday in the Naraha Rural Municipality of the Siraha district in Madhesh province. Rishi Nath, 19, Om Shanker Yadav, 20 and Akash Kumar Mandal, 19, all residents of Bihar, were arrested after a pistol was found in their possession during a regular security check. They were arrested on charges of carrying an illegal weapon, according to the Nepal Police. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter, taking them into custody. (PTI)
Four killed in Arizona medical plane crash
CHINLE, Aug 6: A medical transport plane crashed near the Navajo Nation’s airport in Chinle, Arizona, killing four people. The plane, a Beechcraft King Air 300 from CSI Aviation, was carrying two pilots and two healthcare providers. The cause of the crash is unknown, and the National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are investigating. The company is cooperating with the investigation. (AP)
