Approval for night shifts for women
The State Cabinet on Thursday approved a partial modification to an earlier government notification, permitting women to work night shifts. This aligns Meghalaya’s policy with those in place at the national level and addresses a long-pending concern, while prioritising the safety and consent of female employees. To ensure a secure working environment, strict safety measures such as CCTV surveillance and secure transportation will be implemented. Female employees will have the option to work night shifts only if they choose to do so, with no obligation imposed.
Land for MIDFC
The Cabinet also approved the acquisition of 14.6 acres of land from the Meghalaya Industrial Development Finance Corporation (MIDFC) for the development of a slalom course along the Umtham River in Ri-Bhoi. This will be the first dedicated slalom course in the country. The area is already a known hub for slalom, canoeing, and kayaking and played a key role in helping Meghalaya win five medals at the last National Games. With an investment of ₹21 crore, the new facility is expected to boost water sports in the state and elevate Meghalaya’s profile on the national map.
Nursing homes service rules
Further, the Cabinet approved amendments to several service rules, including the Meghalaya Nursing Homes (Licensing and Registration) Rules, 2015; the Meghalaya Judicial Service Rules, 2006; the Meghalaya Higher Judicial Service Rules, 2015; the Meghalaya Police Telecommunication Service Rules, 2010; and the Meghalaya Directory Establishment Ministerial Service Rules, 2010.
Lease of Polo Orchid, Jiva Resort extended
The State Cabinet has approved a 30-year lease extension for Polo Orchid and Jiva Resort in Sohra. Earlier, the state government had approved lease periods of up to 60 years for private players to improve the feasibility of tourism projects. In keeping with this policy, the leases for both resorts have now been extended by another 30 years.
Under the new terms, the resorts will pay 4 percent of their gross revenue, along with an additional annual lease rent of Rs 5 lakh. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma stated that the decision brings the resorts in line with new lease norms granted to other private players, thereby ensuring long-term viability.
Appointment
The Cabinet also approved the appointment of Lt. Col. Aibanjop Sooting (Retd.) as the Zila Sainik Welfare Officer in Tura. Additionally, financial powers have been granted to the Director of Prosecution as Head of Department.
