SHILLONG, Aug 7: Meghalaya has fenced nearly 400 kilometers of its international border with Bangladesh, covering approximately 443 kilometers.
Informing this on Thursday, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma stated that 80 to 90 per cent of the border has been fenced, but the remaining 40 kilometers pose a threat from infiltrators.
He admitted that the state continues to face problems in the unfenced areas, particularly due to concerns raised by local residents.
Issues in these areas stem from demands for amendments, which are not feasible due to the fencing initiative being governed by national policy.
He said discussions have taken place at the Deputy Commissioner level to address objections, such as land use for agriculture and community activities.
A review conducted a month and a half ago found that only four to five kilometers of the remaining 40 kilometers presented serious difficulties, where public consensus was still elusive.
The Ministry of Home Affairs and the Union Home Minister have been briefed on the situation, the CM added.
