SHILLONG, Aug 8: National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar on Friday stressed the need for “digital wisdom” in legal education, noting that artificial intelligence and law must evolve together to safeguard citizens in the digital age.
“AI and law must evolve together to protect citizens in the digital age. By equipping young legal minds with digital wisdom, we are investing in a more just and informed India,” she said while speaking at a special workshop at the National Law University, Shillong, under YASHODA AI, a flagship NCW programme in collaboration with Future Shift Labs (FSL).
Founder of Future Shift Labs, Nitin Narang, said law students are “future guardians of digital justice” and that YASHODA AI aims to spark critical thinking about ethics, rights, and responsibilities in an AI-powered world.
The workshop marked an important step in introducing future legal professionals to the growing role of AI in the judicial system and broader society. With AI tools increasingly used in courts, alongside the rise of deepfakes and digital threats, the event addressed the urgent need for AI and digital safety literacy among law students.
Discussions focused on AI applications such as case prediction and evidence analysis, as well as their impact on due process. Sessions also covered cyber law and women’s safety, addressing issues like digital rights, gender-based online abuse, and legal redress mechanisms. Ethical concerns—including bias, data misuse, and algorithmic discrimination—were examined in detail.
Participants were introduced to practical tools including ChatGPT, Cyber Dost, the NCW Women Safety App, and other emerging legal technologies. The interactive format encouraged students to engage in simulations, analyse real-world case examples, and explore legal frameworks relevant to a digitally transforming society. The workshop was YASHODA AI’s first major engagement in Meghalaya, reinforcing its aim of delivering inclusive and context-sensitive digital literacy to students in high-impact sectors such as law, where human rights and public trust remain central. The initiative is led by Nitin Narang (Founder), Sagar Vishnoi (Co-Founder), and Pranav Dwivedi (Convenor) through Future Shift Labs.
