NONGPOH, Aug 8: In a significant move aimed at uplifting the farming community, a state-of-the-art traditional market located at Lumdaitkhla, Bhoirymbong, in the Umroi area of Ri-Bhoi, was inaugurated by C&RD Minister AT Mondal on Friday.
The market, constructed at a cost of Rs 5 crore with funding from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, is designed to serve as a central platform for farmers to sell their agricultural and livestock products—especially those grown without the use of chemical inputs. The market houses as many as 66 stalls and is expected to provide a substantial boost to the local rural economy.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by several key dignitaries including Cabinet Minister AL Hek, Umroi MLA Damanbait Lamare, Umroi MDC Isynei Hinge, C&RD Director SC Sadhu, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi B Rani; BDO of Bhoirymbong Dr Rimica Talang and Headman of Lumdaitkhla village ST Rympei among others.
Addressing the gathering, Mondal expressed his satisfaction at being part of a transformative project that is set to benefit local farmers. He noted that the newly constructed market complex would enable farmers to carry out trade activities in a more organised and weather-protected environment.
He further highlighted that under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, the state government has been investing significantly in rural development, including the establishment of new C&RD Blocks, support to Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and multiple livelihood programmes. Mondal added that all these efforts are aligned with the Chief Minister’s broader vision of transforming Meghalaya into a USD 10 billion economy, where rural economic growth plays a critical role.
The C&RD minister also urged the local populace to make full and proper use of the new market facility, especially by promoting organic produce.
He stressed that a community-driven approach in maintaining and utilising the market would not only empower farmers but could also serve as a potential attraction for tourists interested in local and organic products.
