Royal Global University to confer honorary D.Sc. upon Dr. Trehan

GUWAHATI, Aug 9: The Assam Royal Global University (RGU) will confer the Honorary Doctor of Science Degree (D.Sc.) Honoris Causa upon Dr. Naresh Trehan, a world-renowned cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgeon and Chairman & Managing Director of Medanta – The Medicity, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to medicine and healthcare.

Dr. A.K. Pansari, Chancellor of Royal Global University, met Dr. Trehan at Medanta yesterday and extended a formal invitation to attend RGU’s 5th Convocation on 31st October 2025 and receive this Honorary Degree. Dr Trehan has gladly accepted the offer.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Pansari said, “This is a moment of immense pride not only for Royal Global University but also for the entire Northeast region. We are privileged to honour a medical visionary whose dedication, expertise, and service to humanity have set new benchmarks in healthcare. Conferring this degree is our way of celebrating his remarkable journey and inspiring future generations.”

A globally acclaimed cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Trehan has performed over 48,000 successful open-heart surgeries and is regarded as a pioneer in advancing cardiac care in India. He is a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honours, as well as the Dr. B.C. Roy Award from the Medical Council of India, according to a Press release.

Dr. Trehan founded the Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre (EHIRC) in New Delhi in 1988, where he served as Director and Chief Cardiovascular Surgeon. In 2009, he established Medanta – The Medicity in Gurgaon, Haryana—one of the country’s largest multi-specialty hospitals.

Under his leadership as Chairman of Global Health Private Ltd., Medanta has become a model of integrated healthcare, blending modern medicine with traditional and holistic therapies. He has also served as President of the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery.
